SHAGYAS IN ACTION

ENDURANCE

The Shagya horse excels in many disciplines. They have proven themselves to be particularly strong as international level endurance competitors. The criteria to excel at this level is consistent with their stringent development criteria as a Cavalry mount.

In 2007, Shagya breeders and owners in France continue to utilize the Shagya and Shagya-Arabian cross horses very successfully at the International levels of of Endurance competition. Though they comprise a very small percentage of the total number of endurance competitors, they consistently finish at a percentage rate most often higher than the overall completion rate.

The Shagya horse is not only proving that it can give consistent performances - at speed - but the Shagya exhibits superior metabolics which allows them to recover quickly. They also possess a calm and thinking disposition, greater substance and bone, as well as being known for their hardiness and frugality.

In 2006, at the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany - the Gold Medal was won by a purebred Shagya named HUNGARES. HUNGARES was bred at Babolna Stud in Hungary.

In 2005, the World Endurance Champion and the European Open Endurance Champion is the French Part Shagya mare - GEORGAT.

DRESSAGE & 3-DAY EVENTING

Similarly the Shagya horse has been valued in Europe as a "great improver breed" among the warmblood breeds. Because of it's heavily concentrated bloodlines, and over two hundred years of highly selective culling and performance testing, the Shagya has a very powerful influence on all modern warmblood breeds.

One of the most impressive things about the Shagya horse is their incredible prepotency of type and riding characteristics. The influence of the Shagya has been observed to carry through even three and four generations later.

The Shagya has indeed been influential in many Warmblood breeds.  In the United States, for example, the American Trakehner Association 2007 Yearbook and Breeders Guide lists a total of 40 approved Trakehner stallions.  Of the 40 Trakehner stallions, 13 contain Shagya bloodlines in their first four generations.  This equates to a full "one third" (33%) of the Trakehner stallions approved by the American Trakehner Association - bearing Shagya bloodlines.
